LANtastic Network Operating System Compatibility Bulletin
Product Reviewed: Eicon Technology SNA Gateway
Classification: Interconnectivity, SNA
Date: 4/27/93
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Compatibility Statement:
The Eicon Technology SNA LAN Gateway hardware and software release V2R2
is compatible with LANtastic NOS version 4.xx and 5.xx.
Product Overview:
Systems Network Architecture (SNA) is IBM's standard for networking
minicomputers and mainframes. Eicon Technology's SNA LAN Gateway
solution supports three different types of connections to IBM SNA hosts: SDLC
(synchronous data link control), X.25/QLLC (qualified logical link control), and
TIC (Token-Ring interface coupler). Eicon Technology's package includes a
hardware adapter card (the EiconCard) and software which allows you to
connect to SNA hosts via a gateway machine attached to your LANtastic LAN.
One PC is used for the gateway and acts as the manager of communications
between the PC LAN and the SNA host(s). That PC does not have to be
dedicated to gateway functions, but it is recommended. PCs on the LAN use the
SNA workstation software to connect to the gateway and communicate with the
SNA host. Various terminal emulation programs are available separately in
Eicon Technology's Access for DOS and Access for Windows products.
Product Installation Notes:
Installation of the Eicon SNA LAN Gateway is very straightforward and well
documented. The SNA LAN Gateway manual documents installation of both the
EiconCard and its accompanying software. You should follow the instructions in
the manual for installing the software on a NetBIOS-based LAN. Thorough step-
by-step instructions are included for both the gateway and the SNA workstation
software installation.
Product Execution Notes:
The gateway software installation program creates a batch file called
SNAGATE.BAT that resides in the root directory of the disk to which you install
the software. INSTALL will also add a call to this batch file to your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file so the SNA software will automatically start each time you
reboot or turn on your computer. On the workstations, you establish connections
to the gateway using the ECUSE command. See Chapter 5 in the Eicon SNA
manual for further information.
